Trustees OK Tougher Science Requirements
Trustees have agreed to strengthen science requirements for eighth-graders, citing studies showing that most younger American students lag behind many of their international counterparts in the subject.
Beginning this fall, eighth-graders in the Capistrano Unified School District will be required to take two semesters of science, rather than one. About 33% of Capistrano’s eight-graders already take one year of science.
The new requirement will be phased in to give the district time to buy books and hire more science teachers. The transition should be completed by 2000. The program’s cost is still being studied.
