NOT SO BAD

In David Kronke’s interview with Meg Ryan (“Love, Cosmic Style,” April 12), he notes that before her film success, she “did some bad TV (including a stint on the soap ‘As the World Turns’).”
Kronke fails to note that this “bad TV” gave Ryan tremendous exposure and set the stage for an even more brilliant career to come. She filled loyal “As the World Turns” viewers’ hearts with joy and complete awe in the talented performer. She established a character named “Betsy” that will forever be associated with her. There are worse things in life.
And perhaps Ryan will someday comment that she “did some bad interviews” in her past, namely the one she did with David Kronke.

Meg Ryan’s career was built upon a foundation of hard work, excellent training, a little luck and an unparalleled experience as a cast member of a daytime drama that has turned out many film stars, including Julianne Moore, Dana Delany and Oscar winner Marisa Tomei.
Daytime soap work, although thought of as unglamorous by some, has proven to be an endless gold mine of talent for Hollywood actors. “As the World Turns” is not “bad TV.” Kronke’s flippant remark offends me and probably offends the countless men and women who make their careers in daytime drama. This is a highly celebrated and decorated, masterful series that has entertained and educated us since 1956.
We are all proud of our work and we hope that stars like Meg Ryan are equally proud of their time in the world of soaps.
