More Questions on UCI Scandal

* Re: “UCI Scandal’s Bottom Line,” Editorial, March 31: I would like to congratulate The Times for raising the question of UCI’s responsibility. As a former patient, as most former patients, I believe that this whole case is a cover-up at the expense of the taxpayer.

The commentary had conflicting statements. If the doctors had $8 million in unreported revenue, why is it that our federal government could not convict Dr. Stone of tax evasion? In fact, the only conviction was for overbilling, which benefited the university.

As for needed changes, the UC system needs to provide support personnel necessary to attract and retain world-renowned educators. Why were there $5-an-hour clerks working at a world-class clinic? UCI employees did not understand nor care about the importance of consent forms. To this day, the FBI has yet to come up with any of our consent forms that we signed as patients.

To help the taxpayers of California, we need more research and need insurance reform making infertility treatment comprehensive and accessible to all.
