Eight local students have been awarded Dr. Cynthia Coad Scholarships by the Anaheim Independencia Community Center Board.
A total of $9,000 in scholarships was presented to students who have performed volunteer work that has benefited La Colonia, a low-income Latino community, and its Anaheim Independencia Community Center.
The winners are: Sophia Garcia, La Verne University; Carmela Sotelo, Cypress College; Luis Valencia, Cypress College; Candice Garcia, Magnolia High School; Yara Portal, Magnolia High School; Gina Fierro, Cypress College; Crystal Guadan, Magnolia High School; and Manuel Ontiveros, who will attend Cal State Long Beach in the fall.
Since the program was founded in 1992, 35 Coad scholarships have been given out. The awards total $31,200.
The board believes that solutions to the gang problem are to encourage good role models and provide financial assistance for career education.
