California homes priced at $1 million or more sold in record numbers during the second quarter, with the San Francisco Bay Area and the San Diego County community of Rancho Santa Fe leading the way. Sales of million-dollar houses and condominiums reached 1,480 from April to June, up 43.6% from the same period of 1997, Acxiom Corp.’s DataQuick Products division said.

* Los Angeles-based Petersen Publishing Co., which owns such diverse magazines as Motor Trends, Guns & Ammo and Teen, has purchased the company that owns Surfer magazine, the oldest publication devoted to the sport, for undisclosed terms. Petersen said it acquired Surfer Publications, a San Juan Capistrano company that also publishes several magazines devoted to so-called extreme sports.
