Breaking with its traditional succession, Newport-Mesa Unified School District trustees voted Tuesday not to allow Wendy Leece to serve as vice president, the board’s second-highest officer, citing what members call her conservative views. Some feared that her stance on tax increases could derail a school bond issue for capital improvements.
Instead, the board elected Dana Black to replace Serene R. Stokes as vice president.
The board did follow succession in having Stokes replace James M. Ferryman as president and David Brooks to replace Leece as clerk.
