‘Peace Pole’ Dedication
An Irvine synagogue on Sunday plans to dedicate a “peace pole” for interfaith understanding and Middle East peace efforts.
Hours before the first night of Hanukkah, members of Congregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot will plant the 7-foot pole, which is inscribed with the words “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in four languages: English, Hebrew, Japanese and Russian.
Synagogue officials said the pole was presented to the congregation by St. Mark Presbyterian Church of Newport Beach.
Rabbi Bernie King will lead the dedication ceremony and will be joined by Cantor Arie Shikler. The ceremony will begin at 9:45 a.m. at the synagogue, 3652 Michelson Drive at Harvard Avenue in Irvine.
