Vasconcellos Drops Out of Race for Governor

State Sen. John Vasconcellos, who has spent the last several months pondering a bid for governor, reluctantly pulled out of the race Tuesday. The man who made his national name by encouraging self-esteem said that in the end he did not have it in him to beg for the money he needed to run a campaign.
“I didn’t have the stomach to get on the phone and beg,” the Silicon Valley Democrat said. “My life is too precious.”
During the time he considered the race, Vasconcellos collected only about $50,000.
