Gunman’s Rampage Kills 8 Neighbors

A 58-year-old man armed with two hunting rifles went on a house-to-house shooting rampage and killed eight neighbors before being beaten to death by survivors in the small village of Drauchiu, 30 miles north of the capital, Vilnius. The dead were four men and four women, ages 17 to 65. “It seemed that he wanted to kill everyone in the village,” a police spokesman said. Each victim was shot once in the head or chest. Only two inhabitants of four houses were left alive, one of them the gunman’s mother. Police said his motive was not known. Last September in neighboring Latvia, seven people harvesting potatoes were gunned down in a feud over property.
