DIVISION V-A

Defending champion: Oxnard Santa Clara.
Top teams: Palos Verdes Estates Rolling Hills Prep (17-1); Santa Barbara Laguna Blanca (18-8); Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep (13-9); Los Angeles Price (19-3).
Dark horse: Orangewood Academy (17-6). The Spartans, who finished second to Downey Calvary Chapel in the Academy League, have a veteran group and a pretty good playoff draw.
Top players: Josh Coulter (Rio Hondo Prep), Othel Johnson (Price), Chris Thomas (Laguna Blanca), Nick Wolfsen (Orangewood Academy).
Notes: Orangewood had one of the more successful seasons in recent school history. It didn’t get one of the four top-seeded spots, but it did draw a bye and won’t play until Friday, when it hosts the winner of the Hemet Baptist Christian-Redlands Calvary Chapel game. Forward/center Wolfsen has been a workhorse for the Spartans, the only team from the county in this division. Wolfsen averages 12 points and 10.8 rebounds. Forward Starly Alvarado is one of the county’s best free-throw shooters (83.3%).
