Rain was hardly a hurdle for the 24 Hour Fitness Spirit Run Sunday at Fashion Island.
Organizers raised $125,000 for Newport-Mesa Unified School District campuses--more than ever in the event’s 15-year history. Last year, when skies were clear, the event raised $80,000.
“There’s so much community spirit in Newport Beach, so we knew people would turn out,” said Rita Goldberg, a race organizer.
Runner David Parsel won the men’s 10K at 32 minutes 58 seconds and Leslie King won the women’s event at 43:43. There also was a 5K and events for children.
Anderson, Harbor View and Lincoln Elementary Schools will benefit from race proceeds.
