Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, rises in the southeast about 6:30 p.m. and is prominent the entire evening. When it is low in the sky, atmospheric turbulence often causes it to twinkle madly and to appear to change color. Sirius is the closest star visible from California, and it is 8.6 light years (50 trillion miles) from Earth. Sirius is the “Dog Star” in Canis Major, the Big Dog. Orion that Hunter and Gemini the Twins are above Sirius during the evening.
