The Cal State Northridge baseball team lost for the second time this week, falling to Arizona, 18-1, Wednesday in a nonconference game at Arizona.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 24 in the nation, took advantage of a solid pitching performance by Rob Shabansky (1-0), who allowed just four hits and two walks in five innings. He had a career-high eight strikeouts.
Freshman left-fielder Eric Horvat, from Hart High, was three for three, including a double, for the Matadors (0-2).
Arizona (2-0) scored eight times in the first inning and chased Northridge starting pitcher Ray Morawski (0-1) after three innings. Morawski allowed 11 runs on 10 hits, and the game was called after 6 1/2 innings because of the NCAA’s new 12-run rule.
Erik Mattern had four hits, including a three-run home run and a triple, for the Wildcats.
