Proposal to Elect Mayor to Be Decided by Voters

Voters will decide in November if they want to have a mayor who is elected citywide.
Council members on Monday directed City Atty. Michele Bagneris to draw up a ballot measure on the issue, as well as another that would increase council pay for the first time in nearly three decades, from $50 a meeting to $250 per meeting. The new mayor would receive $375 per meeting.
Under the system to be considered in November, voters would elect seven council members and a citywide mayor. At present, council members rotate into the ceremonial mayor’s post every two years.
Voters also will decide if they want to begin electing a citywide mayor in March 1999 or 2001.
Council members did not make a decision on a recommendation to change the way the Pasadena school board is elected, and instead decided to form a new task force to study how to make the board more responsive.
