Pacific’s New Manager, Wood, Is Home-Grown

Pacific Manager John Wood, who took over when Jim Derrington was fired last week, attended Hueneme High and Oxnard College before playing in the Milwaukee Brewers’ organization from 1980-85.

Wood, 37, managed in a professional league in Belgium in 1989-90.

The Western League resumes play tonight after a three-day break for its all-star game. Pacific plays host to Sonoma County at 7:05 at Oxnard College.

JETHAWKS

Cirilo Cruz had three hits and Anton French had two, but the JetHawks dropped a 7-4 decision to the Lake Elsinore Storm at Lake Elsinore Diamond on Tuesday.

Cruz scored one run for the JetHawks (11-15) and French scored twice, but Lake Elsinore scored five runs on seven hits in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead.

Double-A--Catcher Frank Charles (Montclair Prep), a Texas League all-star, hit his eighth and ninth home runs, had three hits and drove in three runs for Shreveport in a 7-3 victory over Midland. . . . Shreveport right-hander Robert Crabtree (Cal State Northridge)) pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three, to lower his earned-run average to 3.09. Crabtree has allowed five hits and struck out 16 in 11 2/3 innings since being promoted from Class-A.

Class-A--Right-handed Jon Garland (Kennedy), the Chicago Cubs’ first-round draft pick in 1997, allowed three runs in five innings and took the loss in Quad City’s 6-5 victory over Rockford. Garland (3-6), whose earned-run average is 5.34, struck out six and walked four. . . . Fernando Rios (Glendale) had two hits and is batting .271. . . . Jon Schaeffer (Harvard-Westlake) hit his 25th double for Ft. Wayne.
