Council Extends Time to Pick Administrator

Following weekend interviews of the remaining candidates for the vacant city administrator position, the City Council determined it needs more time before making its selection.
In June, the council narrowed from eight to four the finalists for the job, the city’s top nonelective post.
After meeting with the remaining applicants Saturday, the council narrowed the field of four to “a couple,” said Councilwoman Joanne Baltierrez.
“We want to have further discussions with the candidates,” said Councilman Silverio Robledo. “We want to get more information.”
Baltierrez said council members will hold a special meeting Aug. 1 on the matter before finalizing and announcing their selection.
Howard Miura, director of the Community Development and Planning Department, became interim city administrator in July 1997 after longtime administrator Mary Strenn resigned.
Council members said they are seeking a permanent replacement with experience in economic development who will work well with the city’s diverse population.
