Anti-Smoking Ads

Re “New State TV Ads Link Smoking to Impotence in Men,” June 2: I am a nonsmoker who read with interest about the new anti-smoking ads. I had seen a preview on the news of the one implying impotence and thought it amusing.
What really got to me, though, were the last two sentences of the article, about the ad with a dying smoker in the hospital, speaking to the camera from his bed. The actuality is much stronger than anything that can be written by ad agencies and deserves repeating: “State health department officials said the man, identified only as Aaron from the Los Angeles area, was the fourth patient with a tobacco-related illness picked to read the script. The first three died.”

* Is not the California Department of Health Services using part of the state’s $22-million-a-year anti-smoking campaign to advertise Viagra for free?
When a large segment of society is sunk in poverty without health insurance, it is sad to see humans with fancy salaries decide to use the state’s money with an irresponsible kindergartner mentality.
