Grant to Allow Study of Jewish-Latino Relations

The Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion received a grant to study Latino-Jewish relations, school officials announced.
The $8,450 grant from the Haynes Foundation, a nonprofit organization that sponsors social research, will allow the school to explore historical and religious links between the two communities, said research team leader Steven Windmueller.
Jews and Latinos have experienced discrimination and both communities stress the importance of family, religion and education, among other similarities, he said.
“But there is no infrastructure by which the two communities really talk to each other,” he said.
Windmueller said he will present his findings in April.
Founded in 1875, the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion educates rabbis and teachers in the social services.
