A Mission Viejo couple delivering newspapers early Friday were injured when they ran a red light and hit a car, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Angel Amaro was driving north on Street of the Golden Lantern with his wife, Marta, in their 1986 Honda, Sheriff’s Lt. Rich Paddock said.
When they ran the light at Paseo de Colinas about 5:30 a.m., they hit a 1983 Volvo, and Marta Amaro was thrown through the windshield, Paddock said.
The 40-year-old woman was taken to Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo in critical condition, a nursing supervisor said. Her 45-year-old husband was stable there after surgery on his broken leg, the supervisor said.
The Volvo occupant sustained minor injuries, Paddock said.
