Suspected Bombs Found Before Visit

A day before President Clinton’s arrival Saturday in Eugene, Ore., police discovered an apparent set of pipe bombs in a culvert near the airport and disarmed them, according to law enforcement authorities.
Tipped by an anonymous caller, Eugene police spent four hours Friday afternoon locating and defusing what they described as two “possible explosive devices” encased in plastic pipes.
Spokesmen for the Eugene police, the FBI and Secret Service declined to provide further details about the items or their proximity to Clinton’s planned route.
The president’s travel plans appeared unaffected. Clinton landed at the Eugene airport Saturday afternoon, then was driven to nearby Thurston High School in Springfield to console survivors of a shooting rampage last month. A freshman is accused of killing two students and wounding 22 others.
