Taxing Surprise

Travelers headed for the Midwest might want to check again before using Columbus, Ohio, as a destination. The friendly Central Ohio Buckeyes have some unadvertised, creative ways of gouging extra dollars from visitors.
Pick up your rental car at the airport, instead of downtown, and you’ll pay an extra 10% “airport concession fee.” That’s in addition to a 5.75% tax bite applied to the base rental and the concession fee. Our car rental for May grew from the quoted monthly rate of $990 to $1,167--a rather unpleasant surprise at the checkout desk.
