LAKE FOREST — Amy Everett was scoreless for 31 minutes and 58 seconds, but in the last two seconds of the game she converted a pass from Gioconda Mendiola into the winning points as the unseeded El Toro High girls’ basketball team shocked top-seeded Crescenta Valley, 63-61, in a Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinal game Saturday night at El Toro High.
Crescenta Valley’s Michelle Greco scored 27 points, including a 15-foot jumper with 18 seconds left to tie the score at 61-61.
After a timeout with 5.8 seconds to go, Greco blocked Mendiola’s layup attempt, but Mendiola recovered the ball and passed across the key to a wide-open Everett, who made a layup.
The Chargers (27-2) got 23 of its 25 fourth-quarter points from two players.
Sophomore Guiliana Mendiola scored 13 of her 21 points in the fourth quarter. The Falcons finished 24-3.
