La Quinta’s Demarest Wins 500th

Dave Demarest got his 500th coaching victory and senior Gerald Laird set the state record for career hits as visiting La Quinta beat San Pedro Mary Star of the Sea, 9-0, in nonleague baseball Saturday.
Demarest, in his 25th year at La Quinta, is 500-181.
Laird doubled in the first inning for his 191st career hit. He passed West Torrance’s Tony Cosentino. Laird stole third and home after the double for the Aztecs’ first run.
Laird finished with three hits, three runs and three stolen bases.
