High School Students to Tour City Offices

Thirty high school students will learn about the wheels of government Monday when they convene at City Hall for a day of speeches and tours during the city’s inaugural Student Leadership Institute.

Following an 8:30 a.m. presentation by Councilman Stanley J. Daily and City Manager Bill Little, pairs of sophomores, juniors and seniors from Adolfo Camarillo and Rio Mesa high schools will rotate through city departments.

“Our primary goal is to give these students an overview of that level of government that most closely affects them,” Little said.

Representatives from the city’s police, fire, and parks and recreation departments will accompany students. Little said the teens, mostly students from government classes, will be offered hands-on activities in some departments.

“They’ll gain a much better understanding of how the city serves the citizens and spends taxpayers’ money,” Daily said. “And, we may even spark an interest in public service that brings them back as employees a few years from now.”
