Written Comments on Landfill Being Accepted

Those who didn’t attend last week’s public hearing about the proposed expansion of Sunshine Canyon Landfill can submit written comments about the proposal to the Los Angeles Planning Department through Dec. 3.
City planners will include the public’s comments in a written report to the city Planning Commission, said Planning Department spokesman Frank Fielding.
The Planning Commission is scheduled to vote on the expansion proposal and possibly hold an additional public hearing Feb. 25. If the Planning Commission approves the expansion plan, the proposal would then move to the Los Angeles City Council for final review and action, Fielding said.
Browning-Ferris Industries of California Inc., owner and operator of the landfill, is seeking city approval to expand onto 194 acres of city property. It also seeks zoning changes that would allow heavy industrial use of the property; the area is now zoned for agricultural use and open space.
Written comments about the expansion plan and zoning changes can be mailed to: The Department of City Planning, 221 S. Figueroa Ave., Suite 310, Los Angeles 90012.
