City Hall Protective of Resident Fat Cat

Shady, the cat that wandered into Port Hueneme City Hall more than 11 years ago, is owned by city staff and is staying put.
That was the pronouncement from Mayor John Sharkey to Fine Arts Commission Chairwoman Valorie Morrison at Wednesday’s City Council meeting.
Morrison had complained that the black cat has fleas and the litter box reeks. Morrison, who said City Hall is no place for a cat, wanted to know who owns Shady.
On Wednesday, as Shady wandered about the council chambers, stopping occasionally for a scratch behind the ears or a rub on the tummy from audience members, two women who identified themselves only as longtime residents held signs reading: “S.O.S.--Save Our Shady” and “Give Valorie the Boot.”
“Our homey seaside community needs just what it has--a little tender loving care in City Hall,” said resident Michael Tobin in defense of Shady.
Shady, who never misses a meeting, receives free vet care and is fed by the staff at City Hall.
