Chapman Eliminates Kingsmen

Chapman College continued its domination of Cal Lutheran with a 2-1 victory Wednesday in the first round of the NCAA Division III West Regional men’s soccer tournament at Cal Lutheran.

Chris Retzer converted a crossing pass from Aaron Poling for the game-winning goal in the 76th minute to help the Panthers (12-7-1) advance.

The Kingsmen (14-6) have a 2-8-1 record against Chapman, including a 4-0 loss in the third game this season, and are 2-4-1 in Division III postseason games.

Luis Alcaraz scored for Cal Lutheran in the 69th minute to make the score 1-1.

The Kingsmen had a 25-9 shot advantage but could not convert.

Three shots hit the goal posts or crossbar, and two shots in the final eight minutes trickled toward the mouth of the goal but did not go in.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Channel League tournament--In a rematch of the 1997 league singles final, junior Kelly Schmandt of San Marcos defeated junior Yasmin Fisher of Buena for the second consecutive year, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club.

Lizzy Bennett and Lauren Muller of Santa Barbara defeated Jane Bloomingdale and Kelsey Roberts of San Marcos, 6-0, 6-3, to win the doubles championship.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Fullerton 10, Ventura 7--Tim Rhodes scored three goals but the Pirates fell to the No. 11 Hornets (18-9-1) in a Southern California Regional playoff game at Ventura.

Ventura (18-10), ranked 10th in the state, took 12 shots in the second half but converted only four.
