BellSouth may call it a pager, but any palm-size piece of technology that is also a fax, a telephone, a miniaturized typewriter and an e-mail service has another name--techno-wonder. The new interactive pager not only receives, it also transmits messages within seconds, letting the sender know when the message was received, even when it was read.

“You can receive a small version of ‘War and Peace,’ ” says John Kampfe, the company’s corporate public relations manager for wireless data. “You’d go blind, but you can get very large messages.”
