Bryans Accept Challenge in the First Round, 6-4, 6-1

Mike and Bob Bryan, graduates of Camarillo High who left Stanford to turn professional after winning the NCAA doubles championship as sophomores in June, defeated Alex Witt and Mark Johnson, 6-4, 6-1, in a first-round match at the $50,000 USTA Challenger tournament at the Burbank Tennis Center.
The twins, who are 35-11 in doubles since turning pro, moved into the top 200 of the ATP rankings and have made $89,200.
The tournament resumes Friday.
FOOTBALL
Quarterback Sherdrick Bonner, who played at Cal State Northridge from 1987-90, was signed Wednesday to the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad.
Bonner played the last six years with the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League.
He ranks fifth in career passing yards at Northridge with 3,533.
Running back Wes Cobos of Thousand Oaks High has been selected player of the year from the Marmonte League.
Quarterback Nick Czernek of Newbury Park was named the offensive player of the year, with linebacker Anthony Foli of Newbury Park honored as defensive player of the year. Tight end Mike Seidman of Westlake was selected lineman of the year.
Coach Jim Benkert of Westlake expressed displeasure that quarterback Zac Wasserman was left off the first-team all-league squad.
“I’m upset with it because it’s an injustice to the kid,” Benkert said.
Tim Bird of Simi Valley, Art Garcia of Moorpark, Joey Casillas of Thousand Oaks and Ryan Shipton of Newbury Park were voted by the coaches as the first-team backfield.
BASKETBALL
Cal State Northridge’s women made only 32.9% of their shots and fell to Yale, 74-64, Wednesday night at Northridge.
Guard Edniesha Curry scored 21 points for Northridge (3-1) but made only 10 of 29 shots.
Center Katy Grubbs scored 18 for Yale (4-0), which outrebounded the Matadors, 50-40.
Crespi is holding its alumni game Dec. 1 at 7 p.m.
RUNNING
The Ojai Trail 3K and 10K road races will be held Sunday at 8:30 a.m. at Foster Park.
