Hueneme 33, Rio Mesa 20--Donald Thompson ran for four touchdowns and 125 yards in 23 carries to lift Hueneme (2-4) in a league opener at Hueneme.
With the score tied, 20-20, in the fourth quarter, Hueneme converted a six-play, 64-yard drive keyed by Leslie Lee’s 23-yard run and Jeff Garcia’s 21-yard, third-down pass to Moses Gonzales. The march was capped by Thompson’s third touchdown, a 14-yard run with 7:18 to play.
After forcing a punt, Hueneme drove 80 yards in nine running plays and scored on Thompson’s final touchdown, a 12-yard run with a minute left. Hueneme’s Tiloli Tuitama blocked two second-quarter punts that led to Thompson’s first two touchdowns.
Rio Mesa scored three touchdowns in a 3:43 span of the first quarter to take a 20-7 lead. Steven Qualls scored on an 88-yard kickoff return and Mike Liranzo caught a 66-yard touchdown pass. Liranzo finished with four receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown.
