Examining ‘Cartoon Art’ in Lectures

The Skirball Cultural Center is presenting a series of lectures and film programs entitled “Cartoon Art,” beginning this week and continuing through Jan. 30.
Among the guests will be Art Spiegelman--who won a Pulitzer Prize for his illustrated book about the Holocaust, “Maus”--on Nov. 15. Mell Lazarus, the creator of “Miss Peach” and “Momma,” will speak on Dec. 10; Nicole Hollander (“Sylvia”) is scheduled for Jan. 30.
A program of animated films based on comic strips will screen on Nov. 10, and a program of politically themed cartoons on Jan. 14.
A special screening honoring Warner Bros. cartoon director and five-time Oscar winner Friz Freleng will be hosted by his daughters, Hope and Sybil, on Jan. 10. Tickets to the lectures are $12 (general admission) and $6 (students); for the Freleng presentation: $10 (general) and $6 (students); to the animation programs: $6 (general) and $4 (students).
