Calabasas and San Marino Left in Dark Over Who’s No. 1 in Division IV

Top-ranked Calabasas and second-ranked San Marino were supposed to determine which is the best girls’ team in the Southern Section’s Division IV.

But a display of sportsmanship after the outcome was left in the dark will leave the determination of who is No. 1 for the playoffs.

Coaches Bill Bellatty of Calabasas (15-0-1) and Maureen Bryant of San Marino (15-1-1) agreed to call the match a draw after play was stopped by darkness with one match undecided Wednesday.

Calabasas led, 9-8, and its No. 1 singles player, Shervin Saedinia, held a 3-1 lead over San Marino’s No. 2, Lindsey Irons-Kilmer. San Marino held a 72-60 advantage in games.

“This is the way it should end,” Bellatty said. “What’s amazing is that all the kids were standing around there after play was stopped, waiting to see what we would do, and everybody just applauded the decision.”

MEN’S SOCCER

The Master’s 3, Chapman 1--Erik Benitez scored for the Mustangs in the 73rd minute to break a 1-1 tie in a nonconference match at The Master’s.

Rusty Brooke scored in the 64th minute to tie the match for The Master’s (11-5-3).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 2, Redlands 0--The Regals (13-5, 11-0) clinched their eighth Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in eight years of membership at Redlands (10-5-2, 7-1-1).

Christina Rasmussen and Nicole Imhof scored for Cal Lutheran, which has compiled a 93-1-1 record in SCIAC play.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Birmingham 15, Chatsworth 40--Junior Ruben Ruiz, who won the City Section frosh-soph title for Chatsworth last year, led the Patriots to a sweep of the first five places in a Northwest Valley Conference meet at Pierce College.

Ruiz, who transferred to Birmingham on Tuesday after moving into the school’s attendance district, clocked 16:45 over the three-mile course.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Granada Hills 21, Cleveland 42--Nicolette Viray finished first in 19:11 over the three-mile course to help the Highlanders (3-0, 3-0) win a Northwest Valley Conference meet at Pierce.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Agoura 16, Westlake 6--The Chargers scored the first 10 goals and claimed a share of their first Marmonte League title since 1994 at Westlake.

Ian Silvers scored five goals and Dusty Sloan added four for Agoura (14-7, 6-0).

Royal 16, Thousand Oaks 6--Ramiro Saldain scored five goals for the Highlanders (14-9, 4-2) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Van Nuys def. Reseda, 15-4, 15-1, 15-11--Debbie Lim had 12 kills for the Wolves (8-3, 8-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Van Nuys.

Poly def. Canoga Park, 15-4, 15-3, 15-6--Gaby Gallardo had nine kills and five aces for the Parrots (10-1, 9-1) in a Valley Pac-8 victory at Canoga Park.

Sylmar def. Monroe, 15-12, 14-16, 15-2, 15-5--Mayra Villalobos had nine kills for the Spartans in a Valley Pac-8 victory at Sylmar (11-1, 9-1).
