A Newport Coast couple has donated $1 million to a prestigious liberal-arts college in North Carolina to endow an economics professorship.
The Gail M. and Ernest G. Doe Professorship at Davidson College will honor an instructor there who has consistently displayed excellence in teaching and professional achievement, and who exemplifies the “moral and intellectual values of the college,” officials there said.
“Great professors and great teaching are what Davidson is all about, and this was our chance to strengthen that tradition,” said Ernest Doe, who graduated from the college in 1969 before getting his master’s degree in finance at UCLA. Doe has been a banker and motel developer, and is now director of Hanford Hotels Inc.
The first Doe professor will be Peter Hess, interim chairman of the economics department, who has been at the college nearly 20 years.
