Ventura 33, Compton 14--Travis Rogers rushed for 237 yards and one touchdown in 33 carries to lead the Pirates, 1-9 last season, at Ventura High.
Rogers, a freshman from Tennessee, scored on a one-yard run with 14 minutes to play to give Ventura a 30-14 lead. The drive was sustained by a roughing-the-kicker penalty that gave Ventura first and goal at the Compton six-yard line.
Trailing, 8-6, Ventura took a 13-8 lead when Cortez Swanningan recovered a fumble by Demond Winston and ran 12 yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter.
Ventura took a 20-8 lead when quarterback Brian Shubin found tight end Luke Patterson for a seven-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter.
