Cougars Fall Behind Early and Lose, 14-7

HOUSTON — Billy Cockerham had two long first-quarter touchdown passes to lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers to a 14-7 victory on Saturday night over the Houston Cougars in a nonconference game played in a steady downpour.
Houston is playing its first full season at on-campus Robertson Stadium in a half-century and drew 17,540.
Cockerham gave Minnesota (2-0) all points it needed with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Luke Leverson and 41-yard scoring play to Ron Johnson.
Ketric Sanford struggled to get 71 yards and a touchdown in 28 carries for Houston (0-2) and lost two fumbles, including one at the Minnesota 45-yard line with 3:20 remaining in the game.
A last-ditch Houston drive ended with 32 seconds left when Jason McKinley’s pass was intercepted.
