Re “Fight Ensues to Block Undoing of Doctor-Assisted Suicide Law,” Sept. 15: I am now deeply concerned about Congress’ meddling into the prescription practices between a doctor and patient. This proposed bill is an obvious attempt to circumvent the Death With Dignity law in Oregon, which was approved twice by voters.
However, I am encouraged by the united front by the American Medical Assn., the nurses organizations and the professional hospice providers to oppose this bill because of the chilling effect it would have on physicians who need to administer aggressive pain medication to those suffering from an excruciating terminal illness.
Although I am still in good health, I am a senior citizen and do realize that I must someday deal with my mortality. At that time, I pray that I will not be a victim of inadequate pain medication due to big government looking over my doctor’s shoulder.
