Marshals Fatally Shoot Ex-Con Under Surveillance

A convicted felon died Thursday after being shot by Orange County marshals attempting to arrest him at an intersection in Buena Park.

Police said they were withholding the man’s identity pending an investigation.

According to Ken Coovert, a spokesman for the Buena Park Police Department, the shooting occurred about 7:40 p.m. near Beach Boulevard and Durango Drive in Buena Park after several deputies from the Orange County marshal’s office stopped a man and attempted to arrest him. He had been convicted of several felonies and was considered dangerous, Coovert said, adding that the man had been under surveillance. He would not say what the man was wanted for.

After getting out of his car, Coovert said, the man “took an aggressive action” toward the officers, warranting the use of lethal force against him. The wounded man was taken to St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, where he died a short time later.

Coovert would not say how many shots were fired, where on his body the man was hit or how many officers were involved.

All those involved, he said, have been put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
