Violation Notice Issued in Pesticide Mishap

VISALIA, Calif. — Tulare County has issued a notice of violation to the company that applied the pesticide that sickened people in Earlimart last month.
The notice, from Agricultural Commissioner Lenord Craft, alleges that Wilbur-Ellis Co. failed to use water to seal the chemical it was applying to a potato field Nov. 13.
“A notice of violation is just saying that we believe they did these things, and then they get a chance to sit down with us and explain their side,” Craft said.
Fumes from the application drifted into the small community south of Visalia, forcing the evacuation of 150 people and sending 21 to hospitals.
