Thompson Appears to Be Stepping Down

WASHINGTON — A news conference has been called at Georgetown today at which basketball Coach John Thompson is expected to announce either his resignation or retirement.
The father of Georgetown recruit Courtland Freeman said Thompson called Thursday night to say he was resigning for “personal reasons.”
“He just decided he was going to step down from the coaching position,” Charles Freeman said.
Georgetown is off to its worst start in the 20-year history of the Big East at 0-4, and is at one of the lowest points of Thompson’s 27 seasons at the school. The Hoyas (7-6) have not had a losing record under Thompson, 57, since his first season. He has a 596-240 record, with an NCAA championship in 1984.
