OXNARD — Some of Ventura County’s brightest high school students--about 160 on 19 teams from 13 schools--gathered at Oxnard High School on Saturday for Day 1 of the 1999 Ventura County Academic Decathlon.
The decathlon is a 10-event scholastic competition for teams of students.
In essays, speeches and interviews, the students were asked about various topics, including books they had read, their academic interests, views on current events and career goals.

Results will not be announced until Feb. 6, the second and final day of the competition.
The winner of the decathlon will represent Ventura County at the statewide competition in March. Moorpark High School won the 1998 competition. The county schools office has run the competition since 1982.
