‘Cabaret’ Casting
I had just returned home from seeing the stage play “Cabaret” when I spotted your article on Teri Hatcher (“When Teri Met Sally,” by Patrick Pacheco, Feb. 28). I had also seen the Broadway rendition with Natasha Richardson and Alan Cumming. Unfortunately, there is no comparison.
Hatcher has an affected English accent that one would associate with an amateur. Her dancing is meager at best. Also, her voice does not have the resonance or dramatics to carry the role. And, above all, except for one scene, she does not exhibit real emotion for the character. As for Norbert Leo Butz, he is talented and did the best he could. The problem is that he is likable. The role of the emcee represents the decadence and debauchery of Germany in the 1930s, before and during the Nazi era, and should be a revulsion to the audience.
What miscasting! With all of the talent in Los Angeles to choose from, what a shame!
