McKeon on Impeachment
Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon explained that he voted to impeach President Clinton because Clinton committed perjury and obstructed justice, and that these crimes amounted to high crimes and misdemeanors, necessitating removal from office (“An Enduring Source of Valuable Lessons,” Feb. 21). Almost every human being alive today believes that the tobacco executives committed perjury when they testified before Congress that cigarettes are not addictive. The Republican majority (or the Democratic minority, for that matter) has yet to call for an independent counsel to prosecute these people for lying under oath. That tells me that this whole impeachment business was politics and nothing else. He did not contribute massive amounts of money to Congressional election campaigns, as the tobacco companies did.
