Pennies

Why do we still have pennies? Pennies are now worth less than one-tenth of the value they had when I was a child. We got by without tenth-cents then (the equivalent of a penny now) and no one complained. Most people won’t even pick up a penny off the ground. Our government makes billions of pennies every year at a cost of over one cent each. Think of the money that all of us taxpayers would save by eliminating this waste.
I think that we can live with rounding prices to the nearest nickel (or dime and eliminate nickels?) with little impact on anyone. Although the copper producing industry will probably object. The only thing dumber than using pennies is having gasoline prices ending in 9/10 cents per gallon.
