Verne C. Sandwall; Retired Real Estate Developer

Ventura resident Verne C. Sandwall died Wednesday at Community Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was 93.

Sandwall was born June 25, 1905, in Uppsala, Sweden. His family moved to Omaha, Neb., where Sandwall was raised and graduated from Central High School.

He studied architecture for two years at University of Minnesota, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

Sandwall returned to Omaha and went into the life insurance business. He later moved with his wife and family to Pacific Palisades and became a self-employed real estate developer.

He bought and sold land for many years before retiring in the 1980s, said Sandwall’s daughter-in-law, Marjorie Sandwall of Ventura.

For more than 25 years, Sandwall and his wife were residents of Ventura County. They lived for a few years in Thousand Oaks and then moved to Ventura to be closer to their two sons.

Sandwall was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ventura, the Country Club Masonic Lodge in Kansas City, Mo., Shriner’s clubs in Westlake Village and Los Angeles and the Ventura Retired Business and Professional Men’s Club.

“He was a real old-school gentleman. As somebody once said, he was one of the good guys,” Marjorie Sandwall said.

Sandwall and his wife traveled extensively through Europe on tours and cruises. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrna Sandwall.

Sandwall is survived by his sons, Verne C. “Bud” Sandwall and Kenneth E. Sandwall, both of Ventura; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Walt Dilg will conduct a service at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church of Ventura. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale.

Memorial contributions can be made to a person’s favorite charity.
