Freshman Propels Van Nuys Over Grant

Freshman Oscar Carrenza and junior Cody Afkhami combined to win three events and each swam a leg on winning relays Monday to help Van Nuys High edge cross-town rival Grant, 80-79, in an East Valley League opener at Van Nuys.
Carrenza won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.01, the 100 butterfly in 1:09.79 and swam the anchor leg on the winning 200 freestyle relay.
Afkhami won the 100 backstroke in 1:07.82 and swam lead on the winning 200 medley relay.
Van Nuys improved to 2-1. Grant is 1-2.
In another swimming meet:
Crespi 102, Cathedral 43--Kevin Strong won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke and swam legs on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays for Crespi (2-1) in a nonleague meet at Cal State Northridge.
SOFTBALL
Paraclete 8, Antelope Valley 1--Sara Gonzales pitched a five-hitter with 15 strikeouts and one walk for Paraclete (2-1) in a nonleague game at Antelope Valley (2-1).
Barbara Alaniz’s two-run double highlighted a five-run fourth inning for Paraclete. Tami Ortiz went three for four and scored two runs.
