An 84-year-old Ojai woman who was struck and killed by a car as she walked home from a grocery store has been identified as Erna Elizabeth Fross, a deputy county coroner said Thursday.
Fross died on arrival at Ojai Valley Hospital on Wednesday, where she had been taken by ambulance after being hit in a crosswalk at Ojai Avenue and Park Road about 3:30 p.m., authorities said.
Fross was hit by a 1992 Oldsmobile being driven by Howard Criger, 74, of Ojai, according to Sheriff’s Deputy Bud McCracken. Criger had been driving the posted 35 mph speed limit when he failed to stop, the deputy said.
“He just didn’t see her in the crosswalk.” McCracken said.
Criger, a caregiver, had been traveling with a 94-year-old client when the incident occurred, authorities and witnesses said. Criger was not cited, McCracken said.
Fross, a volunteer at Ojai Valley Hospital, was walking to her residence at a local retirement home.
