James Wright, a senior guard who led Manual Arts to the City Section boys’ basketball championship, was selected Thursday as the City player of the year.
The Amateur Athletic Foundation/All-City team, which included Wright, 10 first-team selections and 10 second-team selections, was chosen by a panel of Southland prep sportswriters based on nominations from coaches.
Wright, who will attend Long Beach State, averaged 24.2 points and 6.5 assists for the Toilers, who defeated Fairfax for the title and advanced to the semifinals of the Southern California regional of the state tournament.
Manual Arts senior guard Curtis Millage and senior forward Brandon Moorer also made the first team.
Other first-team selections: Fairfax senior forward Joe Shipp and senior guard Stanley Thorne, Van Nuys Grant senior guard Gilbert Arenas, Crenshaw junior guard E.J. Harris, Westchester junior swingman Lou Wright, South Gate junior forward Ronald Johnson, Palisades senior guard Edward Estavan and Reseda Cleveland forward Kent Dennis.
The girls’ All-City team will be selected by the women’s coaches committee next week.
