No. 1 Notre Dame Cuts Down Chaminade Threat at End, 4-3

Pinch-runner Erik Johnson of Chaminade High was thrown out at the plate to end the game and Notre Dame, ranked No. 1 in The Times’ regional poll, escaped with a 4-3 Mission League victory Friday at Notre Dame.
Johnson, trying to score from first on a two-out double by Jordan Hoff, was tagged by catcher Matt Cunningham on a relay throw from shortstop Jonathon Brewster. Left fielder James Rivero fielded the ball off the fence and threw to Brewster.
Notre Dame (9-0, 4-0 in league play) broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth when Steven Viramontes scored from second on a wild pitch and throwing error.
Brendan Ryan hit a two-run home run for Notre Dame in the first inning.
Ryan Cowsill (2-0) pitched a five-hitter, striking out five.
Chaminade (6-3, 2-2) scored three unearned runs in the third, when Spencer Gordon and Bob Berger hit run-scoring singles.
Crespi 13, Loyola 0--Mike Jackson (3-1) struck out 11 and walked none in pitching a three-hit shutout and his second complete game of the season for the Celts (7-2, 4-0),, who won a Mission League game at Loyola to remain tied for first.
Kris Palomares had three hits and two RBIs, Matt Wilson had a double among three hits and scored three runs, and Tim Leveque drove in two runs on two hits.
Moorpark 8, Simi Valley 0--Nyall London pitched a three-hitter, striking out 10, and the Musketeers won a Marmonte League game at Moorpark.
Moorpark (6-3, 2-0) broke the game open with a five-run fourth. The Musketeers had six consecutive hits in the inning, including a two-run home run by Luis Puentes.
El Camino Real 11, San Fernando 1--Scott Gilmore hit a three-run home run and a run-scoring double for the host Conquistadores in a Northwest Valley Conference game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Gilmore’s home run was part of an eight-run third inning for El Camino Real (8-1, 4-0), which also featured homers by Matt Schwartz, Brian Somoza and Mike Grossman.
Ryan Gunches (3-0) pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts and three walks for the Conquistadores.
Poly 9, Monroe 0--Manny Flores struck out seven, walked none and allowed three hits in only 65 pitches, and the Parrots (6-3, 4-0) won a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Poly.
Juan Guerrero had a triple and four RBIs and George Felix had two hits and drove in two runs.
Lancaster 7, Littlerock 4--Mike Hewson had three hits, driving in two runs, and the Eagles (8-3, 3-0) won a Golden League game at Littlerock.
Delwyn Young and Bryan Spradlin each had two hits for Littlerock (5-4, 1-2).
Harvard-Westlake 4, Brentwood 3--Matt Felder hit a solo home run with one out in the seventh inning to give the Wolverines (4-4) a nonleague victory at Harvard-Westlake.
Harvard-Westlake took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on Matt Thayer’s two-run double and a run-scoring single by John Karavas.
Eric Long had three hits and Karavas finished with two for the Wolverines.
L.A. Baptist 7, St. Bonaventure 1--Andrew Petersen hit a two-run home run in the first inning and the Knights (7-0) defeated the team that ended their season last year in a nonleague game at L.A. Baptist.
Scott Swenson (3-0) pitched a four-hitter, struck out five and walked three in a rematch of a quarterfinal game in the Southern Section Division V playoffs last season.
Ricky Wendt had two hits, an RBI and scored a run for L.A. Baptist.
Lancaster Desert Christian 19, Mammoth 7--Phil Parker hit two three-run homers in the sixth and had four hits and eight RBIs for the Knights in a Desert Mountain League game called after six innings because of the 10-run rule at Desert Christian.
Desert Christian (9-0, 2-0) scored 11 runs in the sixth to expand an 8-7 edge. The Knights had nine hits in the inning, when Phil Seston hit a solo home run.
Dustin Schramm had four hits, including a two-run homer, and four RBIs for Desert Christian.
Highland 11, Quartz Hill 1--Jason Kubel hit a two-run home run in the fourth and the Bulldogs won a Golden League game at Highland.
Jason Allec had a homer and three RBIs for Highland (8-2, 3-1).
Channel Islands 10, Hueneme 4--Eric Rodriguez struck out eight batters and walked four for the Raiders in a Pacific View League victory at Channel Islands.
Rodriguez (1-1) hit a three-run home run and Brian Long had three RBIs for Channel Islands (4-4, 1-1).
Leslie Lee had a triple and a single for Hueneme (4-5, 2-2).
Palmdale 15, Antelope Valley 2--Chris Testa hit two home runs, including a solo homer on the first pitch of the game, and the Falcons (6-3, 2-1) won a Golden League game at Antelope Valley that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
John Felkins hit three doubles and drove in five runs for Palmdale, which scored nine in the first.
Valencia 8, Saugus 8--Luis Velasquez drove in three runs for Valencia (4-4-1, 0-3-1) in a Foothill League game at Saugus that was called after six innings because of darkness.
Nordhoff 9, Malibu 2--Brian Bronk hit a bases-loaded triple in the sixth and the Rangers won a Frontier League game at Malibu.
