Bases-Loaded, No-Out Jam Ends Up Sweet for Schilling

The Dodgers thought they had pitcher Curt Schilling where they wanted him Sunday. They were wrong.
The Philadelphia ace worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the sixth inning, helping himself and the Phillies in a 12-3 victory.
“We could have broken it open right there,” said Dodger Manager Davey Johnson, whose next win will be his 1,000th, ranking fifth among active major league managers. “We had the right guys up there in the right situations, and we had some pretty good swings.
“We just didn’t get anything out of it. That’s baseball.”
With the Phillies leading, 3-2, Schilling walked Gary Sheffield to open the sixth. Sheffield advanced to second on Raul Mondesi’s single, and Dave Hansen walked to load the bases with Todd Hundley on deck.
Schilling added to the Phillie fans’ concern when he started 3-and-0 against Hundley, who had tied the score in the fourth, 2-2, with a one-out, two-run home run to center and would later add a run-scoring single in the eighth.
But the Phillie starter battled, working a full count against Hundley, who struck out swinging on the eighth pitch in the at-bat.
Then Schilling started out 3-and-0 against Todd Hollandsworth, but again, he worked to a full count. On the seventh pitch, Hollandsworth struck out swinging.
Adrian Beltre grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning, sparking a standing ovation by the fans and Schilling’s teammates.
“He threw a lot of great pitches right then,” Mondesi said. “It was tough we didn’t score any runs, but he was just good.”

TONIGHT
DODGERS’ CHAN HO PARK (2-2, 6.15 ERA)
vs.
EXPOS’ DUSTIN HERMANSON (2-2, 3.24 ERA)
* Update--This is the final stop on a nine-game, three-city trip. The Expos are still cutting costs and their ownership situation is tenuous, but enough talent remains to cause the Dodgers problems. Right fielder Vladimir Guerrero is a rising star, and there would be room for pitcher Hermanson in most rotations. The Dodgers don’t enjoy playing at Olympic Stadium. They continued to struggle in Canada last season, getting swept in a three-game series in August that effectively eliminated them from the National League wild-card race. Park is coming off his second quality start of the season, working 6 2/3 innings in a 3-2 victory Wednesday over the Milwaukee Brewers. Park is 0-2 with a 3.82 ERA in seven games (four starts) against the Expos. He is 0-2 with a 7.24 ERA in 13 2/3 innings at Olympic Stadium.
* Tuesday, 4 PDT.--Ismael Valdes (3-0, 3.53) vs. Carl Pavano (0-4, 7.83).
* Wednesday, 4 PDT.--Carlos Perez (1-3, 5.65) vs. Javier Vazquez (1-1, 4.45).
