Player’s Family Files Lawsuit Against District

The family of a Tustin High student has filed a lawsuit against the school district for injuries allegedly suffered in an altercation with a former boys’ basketball teammate.
Mike Pinto said he suffered a fractured cheekbone, nose, facial lacerations and other injuries during a fight with 6-9 freshman center DeAngelo Collins during an early morning workout March 24 in the campus gym. Collins, an All-Golden West League first-team selection last season, was arrested at the scene by Tustin police, then released. The case has been turned over to the county district attorney’s office.
Tustin Unified School District spokesman Mark Eliot said the district is reviewing the lawsuit.
“The whole matter is under litigation and we can’t say anything more than that,” he said. “[Collins] is no longer at the school.”
Collins withdrew from Tustin shortly after he was arrested and has since enrolled at Inglewood High. He averaged 12 points and 11.9 rebounds last season.
